You Rock January 10, 2013

Caelum is learning letters at daycare.  He knows that his and daddy’s names start with a C, and he knows there is a C in the middle of my name.  I received a magnet from the Fargo Marathon, trying to entice me into running a race again this year.  It is personalized and says my name in place of “Fargo.”

Caelum was looking at it yesterday, and I helped him find my name.  He asked me what the other word was, so I told him “Rocks.”

This morning, not long after waking, he of course was standing in front of the fridge, contemplating his first course of breakfast.  He pointed out the magnet again and said, “Mama, this says you.  You.  Rock.”

Yes, my darling boy, I do.  And please don’t forget it.

Snow Boots October 4, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nicole Welle Nere @ 8:23 am

Four days ago it was 80+ degrees outside.  I was disappointed I couldn’t start wearing my fall boots and snuggly sweaters.  Well, just as I predicted, ND has skipped right over autumn and into full-blown winter.

Caelum was waking up this morning, and I thought he would be excited to run to the window with me and see; “Caelum, come look out the window with me!”  He lies there in bed, just looking at me.  “Caelum, come on!”  “Noooo, we have to get our jammies off first.”  Okay, fine, get dressed first.

After an argument about not being able to wear short-sleeves (he was allowed to wear his Vikings shirt for the 13th day in a row), he came to the stairs and sat down.  “Caelum, come look with me!  What do you think is outside?!”  “I put my shoes on, Mama.  I can do it.”  Okay, yes, you can put your shoes on yourself first.

Finally I get him to the door to look out.  “It’s raining!” he exclaims.  “Yes, it is raining, but what is on the ground?”  Questioning look.  “It’s snow.  There’s snow on the ground!”  “Yeah!”

I told him he had to wear his hat and mittens today because it was cold and snowing, and as he’s agreeing with me, he starts taking OFF his shoes that he had worked so hard to put on just a minute ago.  “Caelum, why are you taking your shoes off?”  “I have to wear my snow boots!”

Chris just gave me the look.

Birthday in the Fridge September 24, 2012

Three years ago today we were at the birthing center holding newborn Caelum in our arms.  Wow.

He is very excited to be 3!  We had his birthday party on Saturday, and he was so happy to have all his favorite people around.  He kept telling everyone that came in the door, “My birthday’s in the fridge.”  This was met with raised eyebrows.  To him, the cake WAS his birthday, and it was in the fridge of course!

Caelum's 3rd Birthday

So proud of his three ribbons.

For his actual birthday, we went to the mall, where he was made to endure many rounds of new-shoe-testing before finally getting to play in Dinosaur Playland (he liked the dinosaur slide the best) and enjoying his very first Happy Meal.  When asked if he wanted pizza, a hamburger, or chicken nuggets for dinner, the answer was an emphatic “chicken nuggets!”  What a happy boy.

Future’s So Bright, He Has to Wear Shades September 20, 2012

Caelum was Mr. Cool yesterday.  He had to wear his sunglasses while getting ready for daycare, because a girl at daycare had her sunglasses the day previous.  As he’s getting ready to leave, he strides over to me in his big sweatshirt and shades, throws one arm around my shoulders and says, “Have a good day Mama.  Love you.”  Then saunters off, too cool for school.

Needing a Break September 18, 2012

And I don’t mean just for a Kit Kat bar either.  I mean an extended, take-my-mind-and-body-away-from-it-all kind of break.  A time to REALLY devote to reevaluating my life and priorities, discerning concrete solutions, and inspiring myself for real changes and action.

More than a day or even a weekend.  Six months would be ideal.  One month a real treat.  But even a week right now would be a blessing.  Is that possible?  A retreat of sorts is bopping around in my mind, but the details allude me:  when?  where?  how?  (and how much?!)  vacation time?  time away from kids?  I pray this is an inspiration from the Holy Spirit and that something is meant to (and will!) come from this itch.

Spontaneous Sale September 17, 2012

Nothing like a spontaneous rummage sale to start the weekend off right!  I’ve just been on a fall organizing/cleaning spree, trying to get rid of junk, so I decided on Friday night, “Hey, why not put it out on the sidewalk and see if it sells?”  I called up Mom, and since she said she had boxes of items already marked and ready to go, she would bring her stuff up too!  She didn’t arrive until 10:30 p.m. on Friday, but we were open for business at 7 a.m. on Saturday!  Only made about $50, but that’s better than nothing, especially for the little work it took.
